“How long will it take for my viral marketing campaign to work?” This is a question my clients ask me without fail every time they bring me a new project. This is the most common question I am asked, yet the most challenging to answer. You see, every product is a little different and will have a unique way of responding to Internet marketing strategies. You have to keep John Maxwell’s concept of failing forward in your head when you decide to market a product on the web.
Some campaigns will be a total flop, but there will inevitably be that one that, despite all odds, spins out of control so fast it knocks out your servers from the sudden influx of traffic. These shining stars make it all worthwhile.
The first thing you have to do is be open. Just because your business sells a product with no sense of humor does not mean you should nix the idea of producing a video for YouTube. Look at what happened with conservative old IBM. The internal sales management team put together a series of videos that spoofed the sales training process to add some laughter to the lessons. Some of these made it onto YouTube in 2006. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have seen them and gained a new respect for the austere giant, discovering that it has a human side.
You don’t need a degree in cinematography to produce an entertaining video that will capture the attention of a large audience. All you need is a camera or mobile device that records video footage and a YouTube account. It does not have to be fancy. You can get video editing and enhancement software it you like, but there is no rule that says it needs to be Hollywood quality. There are obviously homemade videos on YouTube that get millions of views because of their content.
You can write a script and act out a small production or film something that happens naturally in your business. Either way it needs to be entertaining, funny or strikingly interesting. Keep it short — under 4 minutes. Surfers on the net have a short attention span and even 3 minutes can seem long if your material is not riveting. Do not insert ads for your business in the clip. Discreetly mention your company name somewhere and include a link to your website in the video description. When you have one you know is worthy of the “masses”, send the YouTube link out to everyone you know and let it fly.

I’m applying for a freelance copywriting position with an online marketing company. What kind of writing sample should I send to something like this? I have a BA and MA in English. I have tons of academic research papers but is that what they want? I’ve also written press releases, memos and reports for my current job. I just don’t know what would be appropriate to submit. Please help.
It sounds like the press releases will be your most appropriate choice for this.
It’s good to send a wide variety of writing samples. The idea is to show them that you can write regardless of the type, industry or medium. A good portfolio would have magazine/newspaper articles, ads, press releases, an annual report and even an RFP if you have done one.

Much of yesterday’s traditional showroom traffic has moved into cyberspace. Over 80% of all U.S. households now have Internet access. Nearly 85% of all new and used car purchasers shop online first, before even visiting a dealership. They spend an average of four hours researching and comparing vehicles and prices on a wide variety of manufacturer, dealer and third-party sites such as Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds and Yahoo. More than 10 million used car searches are conducted on Yahoo! each month.
According to a poll conducted by Cars Online, 44% of people surveyed said they were likely or very likely to purchase a car or truck entirely over the Internet, if that capability were available. Last year, one major automotive manufacturer piloted a program in California to sell their cars, trucks and crossovers on e-Bay.
To better satisfy the growing number of customers who shop online, dealerships are creating dedicated Internet Sales Departments to manage customer e-mail inquiries. “It’s grown so fast,” says Donna Lawlis, Internet Sales Manager at Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine, Texas. “We started with just one person. Now we have ten full-time sales consultants in a separate building just to respond to all our customer leads.”
Industry experts recommend dealers hire one dedicated Internet sales consultant for every 100 leads received per month. The industry closing ratio for Internet leads is 2.9%. “Being an Internet sales consultant isn’t a car job, it’s a sales job,” says Eric Hall of Classic Chevrolet. “A normal day for me is to get here at about 8:00 a.m. in the morning, check our incoming leads, start answering customer e-mails, and take photos of our new and used inventory to post on the dealership website. The day kind of progresses from there.”
The NADA reports that 96% of franchised dealerships have a website. Nearly 90% of all GM dealerships are enrolled in a factory-sponsored Certified Internet Dealer (CID) program which provides a dealership website, search marketing tools, links to the GM and brand sites, and automatic updates of national sales and service promotions.
“Our dealership website gives us an opportunity to get business we otherwise wouldn’t get,” according to Rick Smallman, Internet Sales Manager at Lupient Chevrolet in Bloomington, Minnesota. “It’s as important to our dealership as the showroom, or as the Parts and Service Department.”
Over 80% of all activity on a dealer’s website is related to inventory. Most sites feature photos of new and used vehicles, including “Internet Specials,” with detailed descriptions of vehicle features, specifications and pricing available at the click of a button.
“Keeping our inventory fresh or finding that one special car, truck or SUV for a customer is always a challenge,” says Nate Cottrill, Inventory Manager at Al Serra Motor Plaza in Grand Blanc, Michigan. “About 70% of our used inventory comes from auto auctions. To find the quality, late-model cars and trucks we need, we’re now shopping auctions as far away as Texas and Florida.”
As evidenced above, consumers are not the only ones shopping online. Many dealers now buy and sell a substantial volume of their vehicles on the wholesale market through online auctions. Dealers in the Midwest buy used rental cars over the Internet from as far away as Hawaii, California, Nevada and Arizona.
In the same way, online car haulers are helping used car dealers maintain their profitability when shipping vehicles from auto auctions outside their usual trading area. With a few clicks of their mouse, dealers can find online car haulers who offer both truck and rail service options.
Online car haulers are making auto transportation easy, safe and efficient for dealers who are using the Internet to find the best inventory. Dealers shopping online don’t want to be constrained by a vehicle’s location. After buying a car online from a wholesale auction, dealers simply go to the car hauler’s website to get a price and estimated transit time for door-to-door pickup and delivery. Dealers can then place orders, track shipments and manage all their transportation needs in one place online.
Technology and the Internet have changed how consumers compare and shop for cars and dealers are responding. Dealers are finding new ways to use the Internet to manage their business and remain competitive when selling cars to consumers and sourcing inventory for their lots.

Something Unique
There is no 5-step plan to viral marketing success because it will take something wholly unique and very unusual to leave a real mark in the minds of consumers. Not only do you want them to view, enjoy, and remember your advertising, you want them to be so moved by the content that they pass it round to everybody they know. Don’t be downhearted by this, though, because viral marketing does exist and it is possible to take advantage.
Social Networking
The key point to any successful viral marketing campaign is social networking. The entire concept is based on the premise that people communicate with one another. If a person sees something they interesting, informative, humorous, or emotional, they may forward it to other people with similar interests. When this happens you have the very beginning of a viral marketing campaign.
Online Social Networking Tools
On the Internet, much of the social networking has already been done for you. Social networking and bookmarking sites, as well as video and image sharing websites, provide the ideal framework to a successful viral marketing campaign. Having an article, for example, published on sites like Digg can generate hundreds or even thousands of visitors to your website in a very short space of time. Having your video listed on the “most popular” page of video sharing websites can also provide a mass of traffic.
Causing A Stir
Viral marketing needs to spark a reaction of some sort to become popular. It must also be related to the service or product that you offer, otherwise it may garner your pages with visitors, but these visitors will not be inclined to take any desired action while on your site. Ensuring the best possible ROI on any marketing campaign means finding targeted visitors that are more inclined to make a purchase.
A Gentle Push
Word of mouth and referrals have long been a source of customers for offline businesses. Unfortunately, Internet users are less likely to boast about useful sites they’ve found without a push in the right direction. Providing links to Email a page or a link to a friend, or tell a friend can go some way toward this but you still need to provide the viral content.
Turning Your Customers And Competitors Into Your Sales Team
Video, audio, written, and email marketing are the most common forms of viral marketing. If you can create something of real value and then begin to spread the word within your industry there is a very high likelihood that the rest of the marketing will be done for you. Other sites will link to the product or item, and you will begin to cause a natural buzz from people interested in your topic. It’s even possible to attain links from sites that are naturally your competitors.
The Bottom Line On Viral Marketing
Viral marketing can create large amounts of traffic over a short time. A website must be established and ready to convert visitors into sales before this happens, because the viral marketing flush of success can prove to be short lived. However, it can prove to be an inexpensive source of traffic for your site.
When I search for “SEO software,” Google comes back with 40,000,000 results. Even if only 1% of those results are unique SEO software product pages, that leaves me with 400,000 SEO software options to choose from! Some of those options can be downright expensive too. A while back, I had been considering giving an SEO software like SEOMoz or Link-Assistant a try, but I always found myself unable to pull the trigger and actually make the final purchase. I just couldn’t justify the cost of SEO software for my company.
Let’s take a step back for a second and lay the ground rules for what constitutes an SEO professional. I’m going to cast a wide net and just say it applies to anyone who calls themselves an SEO expert/guru/mogul/maven/consultant/freelancer/etc. It will also apply to those that work in SEO firms/agencies/companies/business/corporation/etc but don’t get a fancy New Age title.
I have had the opportunity to test and review some really great SEO software tools over the course of my 12 years in the industry “I’ve also come across some pretty bad ones. Most of them make running a link audit or ranking report or a competitive analysis (one of the favorite tasks of any SEO professional) a breeze. I just drop in whatever URLs I need data on; let the software chug and POOF, out comes a shiny report for my client that looks very impressive. I know the data is reliable, which helps guide my decisions for the SEO campaign. Whenever I need an update on what is going on with that particular client’s site, I just boot up the software and wait for the finished report to download. The software does the heavy lifting, the client is pleased and I look good”what more could an SEO professional want?
Here is where you have to get into cost-benefit analysis. I run a small SEO agency. We have a good amount of long term clients and I’m hustling as best as I can to drum up new business, but I’m not pulling in 3 new clients every week. And as much as I would like to see growth like that, I doubt that’ll happen any time soon. So those big time consuming projects that SEO software is great for aren’t cluttering up my calendar. I might have to run a link audit or two every month, but do those two link audit justify the price tag that comes with a good SEO software tool?
If I owned a larger SEO company that had hundreds of clients and dozens of account managers I might be singing a different tune. With so many reports to crank out every month, SEO software tools must seem like a God send. It helps account managers automate some of the easy, yet time consuming tasks associated with SEO and lets them focus on link building, content marketing and social media marketing for their clients. Whatever it costs each month is well worth the price.
I would love to hear from other SEO professionals about their experiences with SEO software. Was it worth the cost?
Again, let’s take a step back and define “marketing professional.” This can be the marketing manager/director/assistant/etc. of any sized company in any industry. They might work in PR, advertising, brand management or any other form of marketing that isn’t SEO. They could be a one man marketing team for a small company or the head of a 5 person (minus SEO) marketing team. Is SEO software worth the cost to them?
I can see the pro-software argument. SEO software is great for DIY marketers, it keep SEO in-house without having to hire another full-time employee, it might be cheaper than hiring an agency and so forth. Yet a common problem I’ve run into with many consulting clients over the years is that they mistake an SEO tool, like software, for actual SEO knowledge. Microsoft Word is a tool, but it doesn’t do you much good if you don’t know how to write. I feel that SEO software works the same way. The SEO software might come up with a list of 10 on-site SEO recommendations, but if a marketing professional doesn’t have the knowledge as to how to actually implement those changes what good are the recommendations? Even if they do implement the changes, if they don’t understand why it’s important for SEO they are missing important information.
Marketing professionals also have to account for the learning curve when using SEO software. Even the most user-friendly interface ever created takes a little getting used to. Do you as the marketing manager of a mid-sized company have the time to spend an hour a day learning how to fully utilize this new software? I think about how confused some site owners are with Google Analytics and all the ways data can be interpreted there. SEO software is going to spit out the same data in a different format, but that doesn’t mean you’ll automatically know what it means and what to do with it. If you are unable to fully leverage what the SEO software can do for you, is it worth the cost?
I would also love to hear from marketing professionals about their experiences with SEO software. Was it worth the cost?
SEOmoz readers are no strangers to the concept of search engine ranking factors. In general, much of the community that comments seems to delight when some new factor is discovered that may provide a potential ranking boost. Who wouldn’t, right? But in this post, I’d like to suggest that perhaps some refocusing on the “forest” of the ranking factors world, rather than the individual “trees” that populate it, might be in order.
I’ve been writing about SEO since 1996, from before we even called it SEO and from before Google existed. In those 15+ years, I’ve seen no end of attempts to “chase the algorithm.” My goal, writing to a broad audience, has always been to highlight the important factors that stand the test of time.
It’s not that I’m against testing. I love good discoveries as much as anyone, assuming they’re real, backed by solid data or can be easily confirmed (too many don’t meet these criteria). Understanding if the first use of anchor text overrides further uses or how variations of anchor text across the web might impact rankings is fascinating reading to me. It can help break new SEO ground.
What I am against is wasting time chasing things that might not be helpful for more than a day, week or month, versus time spent on the proven, time-tested factors that matter.
The Periodic Table Of SEO Ranking Factors
That was the genesis behind the Periodic Table Of SEO Ranking Factors that I developed earlier this year, working with the talented folks at Column Five Media to illustrate:
It was a labor of love for me, combining my former profession — that of being a newspaper graphics reporter — with my current one as a journalist who writes about search engines and search marketing.
The table was designed to highlight what I considered to be the most important ranking factors, so that any experienced SEO could work with someone less knowledgeable and easily explain, in a visual manner, things that might help a site from an SEO perspective.
Want to rank well? It remains incredibly important to have quality content, or Cq . That’s why it’s the first factor listed on the chart.
Want to rank well? It remains incredibly important to have conducted proper keyword research, or Cr , a topic that sometimes feels forgotten in the quest for more exotic ranking factors.
Want to rank well? The locality of a searcher — Pl — has grown into a major ranking factor that can seem all-but-forgotten by some SEOs who assume that “normal” results still exist and can somehow be found by running proxies or using the pws=0 trick. Google personalizes results down to the metropolitan level in the US and elsewhere. Good luck “adjusting” for that to get your “normal” results.
The Ranking Elements
The table contains four major “element” groups:
On The Page Factors
Off The Page Factors
Blocking Factors
Violation Factors
Here are the individual elements, shown close up:
Each individual element is meant to keep people focused on the big picture issues relating to that factor, which I fear sometimes get lost as new SEOs enter the space, as intermediate SEOs try to build their skills and even experienced SEOs may lose track of.
The Bigger Picture
To better illustrate, I’ll use some different examples below, contrasted against the SEOmoz Ranking Factors Survey . I enjoy reading this survey, when it’s done every two years. But some of the questions can get way too granular for me.
For example, is a keyword being in the first word in an H1 tag important or not? That’s something the SEOmoz survey tried to measure .
The SEO Periodic Table isn’t that specific. When it comes to header tags — element Hh — it’s trying to stress headers can have an overall impact and that people should be thinking about them generally:
Should you focus on “linking root domains with partial match anchor text,” as the survey tried to measure ?
For many people, I’m hoping the table emphasizes that they more generally need to be seeking out quality links, or the Lq factor:
Should you seek Facebook shares, as the survey found highly correlated ? Even though Google’s Matt Cutts said Facebook shares don’t matter ? Even though SEOmoz, after further research agreed with Cutts and wrote “Google is not using Facebook share data directly to rank?”
The table says yes, of course you should. And you should because both social shares (Ss) and social reputation (Sr) are generally having an impact on search rankings:
Maybe Google isn’t using Facebook share data now. But those shares might leak out from Facebook into links that get counted in other ways. Meanwhile, Bing absolutely does use Facebook data as part of its ranking system. And tomorrow, Google might start using them, just as overnight in July, Google suddenly lost Twitter data that it had.
Social signals aren’t just some fad that’s going away. Social signals are the new link building . Exactly how those signals get counted, just as how exactly links get counted, is going to be subject to specific change over time and hard to assess. But generally, you want to do social.
If you stopped doing Facebook work solely because you decided “Google doesn’t care,” then potentially you’re behind the curve if Google does care down the line — not to mention for Bing now and from getting traffic from Facebook directly.
Again, it’s not that I’m saying don’t test, don’t have an interest in specifics, don’t try to learn. Rather, it’s a reminder to focus on the big stuff that matters first. See the larger picture, before you chase down some alley such as whether LDA is real or not .
That’s what the chart is about. For the SEOmoz fanatic, I hope it’s a tool you’ll use alongside the SEOmoz ranking survey and the material you read on SEOmoz itself. And for anyone, I hope it’s a useful tool to make the complexity of SEO easier to begin with.
Bonus: Movie Time
For the real beginners, there’s another labor of love I worked on earlier this year, a short search engine optimization video to explain SEO in plain language, to anyone. It’s only 3 1/2 minutes long:
When so many still assume that SEO is a bad thing , to the degree that Google itself had to recently remind everyone that no, SEO isn’t spam , I hope our video helps explain the concept in friendly terms, and that people can graduate from it to our Periodic Table framework or the more specific advice they’ll find here on SEOmoz and elsewhere.
If you like the table, you can get a copy here . There’s also our associated Search Engine Land’s Guide To SEO , which explains it in detail. We also provide extended resources from us and around the web on our What Is SEO? page, which includes two other guides people should know — the SEOmoz SEO guide , as well as Google’s own .

This approach works on human nature. People naturally want the most out of life. You need to convince them that what they are buying is worth more than their money. And people simply hate spending money. What people love is getting something for free. This is where adding bonuses and free gifts come in handy.
Most people don’t want to lose out on the opportunity of acquiring something for free. This will always convert more people into paying customers, who would have otherwise left your site unconvinced.
The great thing about internet marketing is that it’s easy to create bonuses. Digitally downloadable information can be created fairly easily, and at no additional cost to you.
You can write up a special report, an audio or video file, or any other information product that relates to your niche. These all have very high-perceived value, and when you offer them for free, your conversions will soar. Many people may even be drawn to make the purchase not for the product itself, but for the bonuses they get with it.
You should try to get the perceived value of your bonuses to equal at least 3 times that of your actual product/service. For example, if your product sells for $99, then the value of your bonuses should come to about $300.
This is quite easy. With any information product, you are the one creating the price for it. As long as it is valuable (which it always should be) you can sell a special report for as much as $97. Be sure to tell your customer all the wonderful benefits the bonus will give them in your sales copy, or else they won’t see the value in it.
Always point out in your sales copy the exact amount that the bonus is worth, but that they get it free with the purchase. Instill that word “free” into your customers’ minds, without being obnoxious.
You may think that creating bonuses sounds like a lot of work, but believe me… the effort you put into it now will be nothing compared to the results you’ll get!
You must find a good niche in internet marketing, check the stats. Type your seed keyword for that niche into a keyword tool to find out how many searches it gets every month. It’s best to stay over 10,000 searches. (Obviously, the more the better.)
You then need to check to see if it’s overly competitive. Go to Google, Yahoo!, and MSN search engines. Type into the search in quotes “your seed keyword”. On the sidebar there should be a total number of search results.
With Google, it’s best to stay under 1,000,000 results. With Yahoo!, under 500,000. And with MSN, under 300,000. This will keep your competition at a minimum, and obviously, the less the better with these numbers. These figures are what I go by; however, you will get different recommendations from different internet marketers.
Once you find a niche that fits into the above criteria, type the keyword into Google and scan through the websites that come up. See what other people are selling, if there are people selling at all. You may find that there is so much free information, that it would be practically impossible to sell anything in it.
